The only event co-organized by governments across the Taiwan Strait – the 8th Swimming Relay Across Kinmen-Xiamen Strait was unveiled in Shuangkou Beach in Lieyu Township yesterday morning. Kinmen County Magistrate Chen Fu-Hai welcomed the 180 swimmers from four places across the Taiwan Strait (Taiwan, China, Hong Kong, and Macau) to this major sports event. Magistrate Chen pointed out that Kinmen and Xiamen are geographically close to each other, and Kinmen plays the role of “angel of peace” in cross-Strait peaceful developments. The blueprint for future tourism development in Kinmen and Xiamen is to build a cable car between the two areas. Magistrate Chen said that people will be able to look down at the crossing from cable cars in the future, and was applauded by personages from across the Taiwan Strait.

Council Speaker Hung Li-Ping, Deputy Speaker Hsieh Tung-Lung, and Council Member Hung Hung-Pin also led directors of the county council to attend the event. The host Lieyu Township Mayor Hung Cheng-Fa led Secretary Fang Hsiao-Ping and cadre members to provide assistance and services. Magistrate Chen pointed out in his speech that Kinmen is a good place with beautiful mountains and water. Kinmen was once a battlefield in the tense era of cross-Strait confrontation, but as cross-Strait relations relaxed and exchange began, Kinmen has become an “angel of peace” for cross-Strait peaceful development due to its close geographic location to Xiamen. Magistrate Chen said that the “Kinmen-Xiamen Crossing” is the only sports event co-organized by governments across the Taiwan Strait, and he specially thanked General Administration of Sport Swimming Management Center Social Sports Department Director Jiang Binpo for his participation and promotion over the past eight years.
Magistrate Chen pointed out that this year is the eighth “Kinmen-Xiamen Crossing,” and “eight” is a good beginning. In the past, Kinmen was surrounded by water and also a battlefield, making its status relatively special. Now Kinmen plays the key role of an ambassador of peace, and ground breaking developments will be made in cross-Strait relations in Kinmen. Magistrate Chen said that people across the Taiwan Strait engage in interactions and exchange starting from the Kinmen-Xiamen Crossing, and a “short 7,000 meter swim has extraordinary meaning.”
Regarding the blueprint for future tourism in Kinmen and Xiamen, Magistrate Chen pointed out that Kinmen and Xiamen is the closest distance between the two sides, and a cable car can be built in the future to make cross-Strait interactions more convenient. The Transportation Committee of the Legislative Yuan also resolved to fully support a tourism cable car from Xiamen to Kinmen. If the cable car is supported by governments on both sides, there can be high expectations for the future tourism market, and visitors will be able to look down at the crossing from the cable cars above. Magistrate Chen said that if the cable car is successfully construction, there will surely be more interactions between the two sides.
Council Speaker Hung Li-Ping also pointed out that the Kinmen-Xiamen Crossing is a major event of both the county government and council, and the county council will use its actions to show its support. Speaker Hung said that this is the eighth Kinmen-Xiamen Crossing, and it represents stable and peaceful cross-Strait developments, and hoped that the crossing will create more opportunities for both sides, while the event becomes more and more interesting. Speaker Hung also hoped that the swimmers will make personal breakthroughs and set new records.
Deputy Secretary General Ruan Dunliang of Xiamen Municipal Government indicated that the Xiamen-Kinmen Crossing is a major cross-Strait sports event, and thanked Kinmen County Government for the warm reception, making Chinese contestants feel warm as if they were family. Ruan Dunliang said that the crossing always made him very excited each year, and coming to Kinmen felt like coming home. People across the Taiwan Strait must be unified and help each other, get along with each other, and with their joint efforts Chinese people will become growingly stronger, creating a new era that belongs to Chinese people.
Ruan Dunliang said that the Xiamen-Kinmen Crossing is a sports event for athletes to challenge their limits, and the contestants are also winners in life. Ruan Dunliang said that this year’s crossing is from Kinmen’s Shuangkou Beach to Xiamen City’s Yefengzhai, and Xiamen people specially used flowers, applause, and wine to welcome these brave swimmers.
