Science can be fascinating! Kinmen County Government held a science day fair yesterday with 38 “science game” booths for visitors to experience, quite a few of the activities were designed by teachers and students. Entire families visited the fair, and all of the booths, whether it may be “air cannon” of Zhongzheng Elementary School, “boomerang” and “origami dragonfly” of National Kinmen Senior High School, or “rainbow on filter paper” of Shang-Chyi Elementary School, were impressive; the “air gun” of Ministry of Education’s central guidance team and water rocket were especially popular, and visitors operated the devices regardless of age, experiencing the fun of experiments.
The 2016 Kinmen Science Day Fair was co-organized by Kinmen County Education Department and National Taiwan Normal University, and students and teachers of all schools in Kinmen County from elementary school to college provided 38 different “science games” for visitors to experience. The event ‘s opening ceremony was held at 10:30 A.M. yesterday, and attendees included Secretary General Huang Ching-Shun of Kinmen County Government, Director-General Lin Wen-Liang of the Education Department, Council member Ouyang Yi-Hsiung, Dean Chia Chih-Ta of the College of Science of National Taiwan Normal University, Tsai Chih-Shen, Yao Ching-Fa, and Professor Chen Mei-Ling of the science education team of National Taiwan Normal University, Liu Chih-Sheng (teacher at Xinming Elementary School) of the Ministry of Education’s central guidance team, sharing interesting science experiments and giving demonstrations.
The challenges of the science day fair were held in the square in front of Jincheng Junior High School’s stadium, and lectures and demonstrations from masters, as well as science fair contestant judging, were held in the auditorium and experiment classroom. The fair began seeing visitors after the opening ceremony at 10:30 A.M., contents of the 38 booths include math, physics, chemistry, information, and environmental protection, and the organizer designed challenges; visitors that complete 15 challenges will receive a gift and become eligible for the lucky draw, which has 80 exquisite and practical prizes.
To promote popular science education, increase the public and students’ interest in science, encourage “hands-on” science experiments, and enhance teachers’ professional competence in science, Kinmen County Education Department and the College of Science of National Taiwan Normal University jointly held the popular science activity series “2016 Kinmen Science Day,” and held the science day fair yesterday. The Education Department held two science camps and workshops starting in January this year under the leadership of Professor Tsai Chih-Shen’s team from National Taiwan Normal University, guiding teachers and students to include contents of natural science, mathematics, information, and technology into outdoor hands-on demonstrations and experiments, using an outdoor science fair to disseminate science knowledge, allow participants to gain an interest in science, and understand that science can be interesting and a part of daily life.
There were a total of 38 booths at the fair yesterday. The “air gun” of the Ministry of Education’s central guidance team was extremely popular. Liu Chih-Sheng demonstrated the alcohol cannon during the opening ceremony, and visitors experienced the air gun and water cannon under the instructions of staff at the site. The “air cannon” of Zhongzheng Elementary School was also quite popular, using various air cannonballs to let visitors understand how air is compressed, and that airflow will remain after traveling a distance; smoke is used for easier observation.
Also, “smart home” of National Quemoy University and “robots let’s move” of National Kinmen Agricultural and Industrial Vocational Senior High School left a deep impression among students. “Boomerang” of National Kinmen Senior High School and “Fly! My airplane!” of the elementary school division of Jinning Elementary & Junior High School are both experiments of Bernoulli’s principle; students were all happy to take the results of their experiment home. “Regular polyhedron DIY” of Jinhu Junior High School, “3D Animation” of Jinsha Elementary School, and “Pyramid Hologram DIY” of Kai-Shiuan Elementary School also attracted visitors.
“Wordless book” of Jincheng Junior High School, “Water disappeared” of Pochun Elementary School, “Rainbow ~ purple cabbage juice color change” of Anlan Elementary School, “Pile up drinks (density)” of Xikou Elementary School, and “Rainbow on filter paper” of Shang-Chyi Elementary School allowed visitors to learn from doing. Many science experiments are actually very close to daily life.
The 2016 Kinmen Science Day Fair included science challenges and performances, and those that reached a certain standard in the challenges designed by the organizer received a souvenir; eighty prizes were given out during the lucky draw. The event aims to increase the public and students’ interest in experiments and science, but many visitors felt it was a shame that the event was only held for one day.
