The Rotary Club of Kinmen, subordinate to the 3rd Sub-District of the Rotary International District 3481, enters its 20th year since being chartered. Witnessing the devastation of Kinmen caused by Typhoon Meranti last year and in order to benefit the society, the Rotary Club has continuously dedicated itself to regional reforestation in the past year. In response to regional afforestation, it held a joint community service event for the 3rd Sub-District of the Rotary International District 3481 in 2017-2018 called “Love the Earth and Protect Kinmen by Planting Trees” in Sia Shu Community. It invited Rotarians and the residents of Sia Shu Community to plant 50 Araucaria by hand. They all looked forward to seeing these trees thrive and grow into a boulevard many years later.

Last September, Typhoon Meranti caused tremendous damage to Kinmen, especially to Kinmen's achievements in greening over the years. Therefore, people from all circles in Kinmen have been continuously engaged in the greening work in the past year. At the same time, the main missions of the Rotary International in 2017 include water resources and environmental protection, especially tree planting and greening. It has also been undertaking the same mission throughout the world.

According to the Rotary Club of Kinmen of the 3rd Sub-District of the Rotary International District 3481, it held the joint community service event on the theme of “Love the Earth and Protect Kinmen by Planting Trees” at its 20th charter anniversary in response to this mission. They hoped that this meaningful event could make a contribution to regional afforestation.

The tree planting activity was held on the embankment road in front of Sia Shu Community at 2 pm on the 18th. It was co-organized by Jincheng Township Office, Kinmen County Forestry Institute, Sia Shu Community Development Association, Rotary International District 3481, Rotary Club of Hong Kong Northeast, Rotary Club of Taipei Shihmen of the 3rd Sub-District of the Rotary International District 3481, Rotary Club of Taipei Hsin-Yi, Rotary Club of Taipei Wen Shan, Rotary Club of Taipei Metro West, Rotary Club of Chung-Shing, Rotary Club of Taipei Rising Star, Rotary E-Club of Taipei Trans-Vision, etc.

Kinmen County Secretary-General Lin De-Gong, Mayor of Jincheng Township Shih Jhao-Min, Chairman of Jincheng Township Elected Representatives Chen Tian-Cheng, Chief of Sianan Village Lu Jhih-Yao, Chairman of Sia Shu Community Development Association Liou Yi-Jin, District Governor and Secretary-General of Rotary International District 3481 Hong Jhen-Pan and Jin Jia-Ruei, Assistant Governor and Deputy Assistant Governor of the 3rd Sub-District Chen Yan-Si and Guo Da-Long as well as about 60 Rotarians joined the grand event. The residents of Sia Shu Community also participated in the activity.

President of Rotary Club Yan Shao-Tang stated that all townships in Kinmen were heavily hit by a super typhoon last year, and the theme of Rotary Club this year was to protect water resources and the environment, which just coincided with the afforestation work currently carried out in Kinmen. With the help of Jincheng Township Office, the Rotary Club found a lot surrounding Sia Shu to hold the tree planting activity yesterday. At the location of planting trees, one could see migratory birds. Yan hoped that the trees would grow up and turn into beautiful boulevards in the future. He also thanked the organizations concerned for their help and assistance.

Although the wind was strong, the enthusiasm of the participating Rotarians was not diminished, which made Lin De-Gong quite uplifted. Lin De-Gong said that the aim of Rotary Club has always been at community service and social service, and the forests in Kinmen were severely damaged by Typhoon Meranti last year. He expressed sincere thanks on behalf of the county government to the Rotary Club for holding the meaningful activity of tree planting in due course. After 1949, the primary task of General Hu Lian when he was serving in Kinmen was afforestation, which has become one of the most important tasks of Kinmen Government. The plant coverage rate in Kinmen is as high as 42 percent, which makes the development of Kinmen starkly different from that of Xiamen. Unfortunately, Kinmen suffered from an unprecedented loss caused by a typhoon last year. Lin was quite appreciative of the Rotary Club for serving the community by means of afforestation.
