Hsu Gi-Sheng Led the Team to Win a Bronze Medal at 2017 Summer Universiade

2017 Summer Universiade ended successfully. Chinese Taipei national teams achieved a brilliant performance and broke many records in the athletic field. In the women’s team half marathon event, our national team won the third place under the guidance of Hsu Gi-Sheng, the pride of Kinmen. This achievement was of great significance as it was Taiwan’s first medal in the international middle and long distance running events. Hsu Gi-Sheng indicated that the glory belonged to the four female runners and that he would continuously coach national elites for the next Asian Games (Asiad) and Olympics to make Taiwan and Kinmen seen by the world.
Hsu Gi-Sheng, a national marathon record holder, currently teaches at National Taiwan University of Sport. He used to serve as a marathon coach for Rio 2016. Due to his outstanding performance in Rio 2016, he was favored by Chinese Taipei Athletics Association and has coached middle and long distance runners for Asiad at National Sports Training Center in Zuoying since September 1st, 2016. On July 9th, 2017, he was identified as the head coach to guide Tsao Chun-Yu, Chen Yu-Hsuan, You Ya-Jyun, and Chang Chih-Hsuan for the women’s team half marathon event at 2017 Summer Universiade.
2017 Summer Universiade ended successfully. Chinese Taipei national teams had an unprecedented record of 26 gold, 34 silver, and 30 bronze medals, ranked 3rd in the final medal table. In addition to tennis, badminton, women’s basketball, and weightlifting, unprecedented records were set in track and field events. Cheng Chao-Tsun shattered the Asian record in the javelin throw with 91.36m effort and won the gold medal. Yang Chun-Han, a sprinter of Amis descent, grabbed the gold in the men’s 100 meters. The last time a Taiwanese athlete won a gold medal in this event was 26 years ago. It is worth mentioning that our national team won the third place in the women’s team half marathon event under the guidance of Hsu Gi-Sheng, the pride of Kinmen. This achievement was of great significance as it was Taiwan’s first medal in the international middle and long distance running events.
